Latin Mass- Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary

Oct 4, 2017

As we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, I wonder how many of us know that the word "rosary" comes from the Latin "Rosarium"-which means rose garden.  When we pray the rosary I believe we can say that we are picking a bouquet of roses to present to the Blessed Virgin in the form of prayers, out of love for her, leading us closer to Christ her Son.

Counting our prayers on beads is a very ancient form of praying used also by the Muslims and people of India.  The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary itself dates back to the Feast of St. Mary of Victory after the defeat of the Muslim Turkish fleet at Lepanto on October 7th, 1571.  It was the most important naval contest in human history.  It was the battle that saved the Christian west from defeat at the hands of the Ottoman Turks.  Almost from the very beginning of Islam, there were wars upon wars between Christians and Muslims.  We remember the Crusades, seven major and seven minor, which lasted over centuries.  The Battle of Lepanto, which marked the end of the Crusades and was the turning point in the history of Christianity.  For by 1571 the Muslims were firmly installed in Europe.  Their ships ruled the Mediterranean Sea and constantly preyed on Christian vessels.  Pope Pius V, in the last year of his papacy in 1571, tried to rally the nations of Europe to join in a Holy League to stop and roll back the Muslem enemy which threatened the entire continent.  The wind and all military factors favored the Muslims, yet the wind mysteriously changed to the advantage of the Christian fleet.  Coincidence?  No, not at all!  It was Our Lady, Vatican Archives later revealed-Pope Pius V accompanied by many of the faithful were praying the Rosary in the Basilica of St. Mary Maggiore.  From dawn to dusk, the prayers continued in Rome as the Christians and the Muslims battled at Lepanto.  When it was all over the Muslims had been defeated.  Of some 270 Muslim ships, at least 200 were destroyed.  The Turks also lost 30,000 men while the Christian casualties numbered between four and five thousand.  The Holy Rosary of Our Lady had won a great victory!

Folks, we can see the power of praying the Holy Rosary.  There is no doubt we are under attack in so many ways.  All one needs to do is listen to the news.

Hurricane Harvey devastated Texas-Hurricane Irma was bigger than the entire state of Floirda and the most powerful hurricane on record-Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico-A 7.3 earthquake occurred 70 miles off the coast of Mexico-the tensions with North Korea and Iran

This month we will mark the 100th Anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima, and it also the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Revolt and the 100th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution and the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Freemasonry-one of the Catholic Churchs's greatest enemies--and all in the month of October-every one!  I do not think we have the answer-I know we have the answer here-don't we?  Our Lady keeps telling us to pray, pray, pray.  One of our greatest spiritual weapon is praying the Holy Rosary.

We could defeat the evils of our day if we would but pray with great faith as they did in the Battle of Lepanto.  But it is always up to us.  Please read the bulletin and the 15 promises of the Blessed Virgin to Christians who faithfully pray the Holy Rosary everyday.  Even more reasons to remember to pray daily the Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary!
